WORKERS from Swindon's emergency services are to be honoured with medals minted to mark the Queen's Golden Jubilee next year.
In the wake of the September 11 terrorist attack on New York, the Government has decided to extend the recipients of the medal, which was already to be handed out to members of the armed forces.
The Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal will be given to police, fire and ambulance workers who have completed five or more years service by February 6, 2002, the 50th anniversary of the Queen's coronation.
Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell said: "The events of September 11 have highlighted the vital role of the emergency services and the potential risks they face.
"There will always be difficult cases which fall just on the other side of the line we have drawn
But the Golden Jubilee Medal now rightly recognises those who face the potential threat of injury or worse each time they are called out in response to 999 calls."
Nationwide, some 366,000 jubilee medals will be handed out.
