The Lost World BBC1, 6.40pm/6.45pm, Christmas Day/Boxing Day The BBC's own lavish production of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's superb novel using computer technology last seen in Walking With Beasts.

Laurel and Hardy BBC2, 9.00am, Boxing Day/December 27 Classic, evergreen comedy.

Royal Institution Christmas Lectures Channel 4, 11.30am/12.00pm, Boxing Day/December 27 Fascinating series of talks for all ages, with Sir John Sulston.

Film Antz BBC1, 5.25pm, Boxing Day Smarter and darker than A Bug's Life but funnier for it. With the voices of Woody Allen, Sharon Stone and Sylvester Stallone, this animated movie is a real gem.

Dawson's Creek Channel 4, 12.00pm, Christmas Eve Slushy teen drama with gallons of angst.

Film Rush Hour BBC1. 9.30pm, Christmas Eve TV premiere of Jackie Chan's 1998 action-comedy hit. Chan is cool and so are the film's breathtaking stunts.

The Alternative Christmas Message Channel 4, 2.50pm Christmas Day This year's host is as yet unknown. Previous messages have been read by Ali G and the family of Stephen Lawrence.

Film Sliding Doors BBC1, 11.00pm, Christmas Day Sappy but entertaining "what if" romance with Gwyneth Paltrow.

Film 2001: A Space Odyssey Channel 4, 12.10am, Boxing Day Stanley Kubrick's death has only made him a greater legend amongst the young and 2001 is the proof in the pudding. If you understand it, even better.

Film Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult BBC1, 11.25pm, Boxing Day An abysmal sequel but worth watching for a few good gags. Leslie Nielsen stars.
