BATH residents who own a cellar which passes underneath a road or footpath are being urged to contact the council.
Bath & North East Somerset Council is currently writing to homeowners to build up a picture of just what lies beneath nearly 15km of road in 140 streets in an area of Bath stretching from the River Avon northwards to lower Lansdown and from Royal Victoria Park in the west to Sydney Place in the east.
The council says anyone who has a cellar but does not receive a letter should contact them immediately.
In a statement, the council says it believes that "there is no cause for concern over the stability and strength of the highway," but wishes nevertheless to carry out a survey after recent concerns from cellar owners in the area.
"We have had a number of letters from people who tell us they are concerned that road traffic might be causing damage to their cellars," said Dave Anderson, engineering consultancy manager for B&NES.
Residents should contact Sharon Parfitt, the co-ordinator at cellars and vaults project, B&NES Engineering Consultancy, Riverside, Keynsham, BS31 1LA, or call her on (01225) 395163.
