Fred and Rita Peart, who have celebrated their golden wedding, began courting when their eyes met across a crowded street.
They were watching the old Victoria Carnival go by on Regent Street.
In the words of Fred: "We just saw each other and we started going about together and that was it."
The couple, who are both in their early 70s, celebrated their anniversary with a party for about 50 family and friends on Friday night and then a meal out with just the family on Saturday.
They have a son and a daughter and four grandchildren.
They have lived in Swindon for their entire married life and moved to their current Penhill home when it was first built in 1954.
When asked what the secret of their long marriage is Fred said: "We've always gone about together and always done everything as a family.
"We both play bowls and basically do everything together."
