SCREWFIX DIRECT LEAGUE: STREET proved to be Corsham Town's nemesis for the second time this term as they completed a league double over the Wiltshire side at The Southbank on Saturday.
Strike duo John Freegard and Matt Pratley were once again on the mark for the hosts, but they slipped to only their second First Division defeat since September 3 when Danny Backman struck a late winner for the mid-table visitors.
Gerry Pearson's side won the corresponding fixture 2-0 at the Tannery Ground on the opening day of the season.
The home side, who began the day in fifth place in the First Division table, began slowly but took the lead after quarter of an hour when veteran frontman Freegard headed home following a James Lye corner.
Street were on level terms when Gareth Morgan beat home goalkeeper Craig Chaplin and went in front through former Warminster Town man John Delahaye moments later.
Pratley equalised before the break when he outpaced Peter Copeland and fired his tenth league goal of the campaign past ex-Trowbridge Town goalkeeper James Smith and Corsham went on to enjoy plenty of possession in the second half.
But a third goal proved elusive and it was Street who claimed maximum points when the home side failed to defend an 85th minute throw-in and Morgan set up Backman for the winner.
With manager Mark Godley absent due to work commitments, Corsham were led by player-coach Freegard and Rob Humphries.
Freegard felt his side had not deserved to lose after controlling the play in the second period.
He said: "It was bitterly disappointing. We didn't start very well but went 1-0 up and went in level at half time.
"After the break we were dominant and the stronger side without really carving out any chances.
"They seemed to have settled for the point but then hit us with a sucker punch after poor concentration following a throw-in.
"But we've just got to take it on the chin and try and go on another good run."
The striker is hoping Corsham can return to winning ways when they visit Larkhall Athletic on Saturday.
Larkhall moved above Corsham by virtue of their 3-2 success at struggling Wellington on Saturday and are managed by ex-Southbank boss Chris Jefferies.
