BISHOPS Cannings Primary School's building fund swelled by more than £660 after a Christmas fair at the school last Thursday.

Santa was on hand to find out what children wanted for Christmas while mums and dads were able to enjoy a raffle, tombola, cake stall and teas.

The pupils organised their own games and sideshows, which added to the event's profitability.

Children will be taking part in a carol service at St Mary the Virgin Church in the village on Tuesday at 6.30pm. But until the new school hall is built, no Christmas production can be staged at the school itself.

Staff, parents and governors launched a fundraising campaign in the summer to find the money for the major redevelopment.

They want an extension to provide an extra classroom, a school hall and offices. Small-scale additions to one classroom and the infant classroom block are also needed.

The opportunity to build a desperately-needed seventh classroom came when the governors decided to close the school kitchen and provide sandwiches for school lunches. They consulted parents and received approval for the project.
