POLICE have appealed for witnesses after an 80-year-old woman was knocked down in a busy Devizes street at 11am on Wednesday 12 December.
Despite the fact that many people were in the area doing their Christmas shopping, the police have been unable to find anyone who saw the accident.
The woman, whose name has not been released, was struck by a Vauxhall Astra as she crossed St John's Street near the Emporium. She was attended by paramedics from Wiltshire Ambulance Service before being taken by road ambulance to police headquarters in London Road and then airlifted to the Royal United Hospital in Bath.
PC Barney Appleton, one of the police officers who attended the scene yesterday, said: "Although she was fully conscious and was talking to us, we are concerned about her head injury which is why she is being flown to hospital.
"We would very much appreciate anyone who witnessed the accident coming forward.
"No one we have spoken to saw what happened and it would assist us greatly if we knew exactly what happened."
Staff at nearby shops, which were busy with Christmas shoppers, were unaware there had been an accident until the ambulance turned up.
There have been no fatal or serious injury accidents on the St John's Street pedestrian crossing in the last five years.
Anyone with information should contact PC Appleton at Devizes police station on (01380) 722141.
