THE Swindon branch of the British Korean Veterans' Association is about to enter its fifth year.
The number of members has grown to 58, not including those we have lost due to death. The age group of the veterans is now 65 to 80. I am one of the older veterans, being 79 years young.
This is the time when these veterans need the help of the association.
We are able to visit members who are sick or disabled and to give financial support from the welfare fund when and where it is needed.
Any new members forthcoming will receive a welcome and a chance to meet old friends.
Members of Korean veteran families can also join on an associate basis.
There are still veterans in the country who do not know of the association and what we can offer them.
The figures regarding casualties during the war are 1,078 killed, 2,674 wounded and 1,060 taken prisoner, of these 50 died in captivity.
This branch is hoping to increase its membership to 100 plus.
The year 2003 is the anniversary of the cease-fire in Korea, this will be honoured by branches all over the country. Also the MoD are laying on a service in Westminster Abbey, followed by a march past and a celebration.
As this will probably be members last chance to attend a national gathering we need all the support we can get, to increase membership nationwide.
