CHIPPENHAM has landed its first major lottery win after the town's heritage centre was given £195,000.
It will help pay for an education officer, and for more galleries and an education centre.
The award was announced as the Queen and Prince Philip toured the town on Friday, December 7.
The Duke visited the Market Place museum during the visit.
The centre had bid for £250,000, but museum chairman June Wood said the smaller grant would not mean any features having to be cut.
She said: "We decided this town deserved a quality museum. It has been so successful and is so popular with the public."
Town clerk Laurie Brown said: "It was recognition of the popularity of the first phase of the centre, and reflects the hard work carried out by the project team."
A contractor is expected to be chosen next week.
