CHIPPENHAM diabetic Andrew Cleeves tried to grow cannabis in his loft because he thought it would help with his condition.
Cleeves, a 34-year-old builder, was given a 12-month conditional discharge when he appeared before magistrates on Monday. He was ordered to pay £118 costs.
He pleaded guilty to possessing cannabis and trying to grow it.
Amanda Sawetz, prosecuting, told the court police officers searched Cleeves' Lords Mead home and found a tobacco pouch with two bags of cannabis.
In the loft they found five small dried out cannabis plants, a heat lamp, insulation materials and an electric fan.
Cleeves told police he was trying to cultivate cannabis for his own use, but the project failed because he did not know what he was doing.
Michael Wills, defending, said Cleeves had never intended to supply the drug, and never smoked it in front of his three children.
