Highworth Town's recent good run was brought to an abrupt halt by North Leigh, who completely outplayed the home side in a 5-0 victory.

Andy McCabe gave the visitors an excellent start netting after just six minutes and there were ominous signs of a rout as Matt Hendra added a second on 22 minutes and Matty Ellis a third three minutes later.

After the break North Leigh kept up the pressure and added further goals from a 20-yard chip by Hendra and Nick Hughes who got on the end of a good cross from Ellis to complete the scoring.

Highworth boss Chris Seagraves said: " We were awful. It was very disappointing after six wins on the bounce. I just can't explain it. We had a good crowd and let ourselves down and to be honest they could have scored more."

It was a case of after the lord mayor's show for Wootton Bassett who were defeated 2-0 in a six- pointer by Almondsbury Town.

Earlier in the week Bassett had turned in an inspired performance beating Swindon Supermarine in the Wilts Shield by two goals to nil.

Bassett boss Pete Yeardley was at a loss to describe the two performances but missed chances played a big part in his side's defeat.

In a scrappy first half neither keeper was called upon to make any worthwhile saves with the best chance of the half falling to Bassett's Jeremy Newton who shot wide from a good position.

Soon after the interval Almondsbury keeper Ryan Edwards was forced to make a good save from Tony Macek.

Almondsbury's Robin Mizen eventually broke the deadlock on the hour when he finished off a good move.

Bassett's Justin Hyde, Jeremy Newton and Mark Vaughn took it in turns to squander good chances before Leo Simpson made sure victory with a good run from the halfway line in the closing minutes.

Fairford's Lee Stoddart came to his side's rescue, scoring an equaliser in the 90th minute against Abingdon United.

Earlier Hamp, Ridley and Brandon had given the home side a 3-1 interval lead, John Hathaway netting for Fairford.

After the break Clarke made it 3-2 on 75 minutes and Stoddart salvaged a point with the last kick of the game.

In Division One West, Purton were made to work hard for a 1-0 victory over Malmesbury Vics.

The Vics more than matched the home side in the first 45 minutes and were unlucky with one effort hitting the Purton bar. At the other end half-chances fell to Jim Igoe, Steve Avenell and Craig Alexander.

Ten minutes in to the second half Purton scored the all-important goal when Avenell slipped a good ball through for Igoe to cut inside a Vics defender and shoot low into the net.

The Vics could well have snatched an equaliser near the end but Purton held on to remain third in the table, four points behind leaders Hook Norton with a game in hand.

Fairford Town reached the final of the Norman Matthews Hellenic Floodlit Cup in mid-week when they defeated Shortwood United 2-0. They will meet Gloucester United over two legs in the final in March.
