THE B4039 near Castle Combe has reopened after being closed for road repairs for two months, but traders said the closure has had a big impact on business.

The one and a half mile stretch of road has been closed between The Street, in Burton, just past Castle Combe, and Acton Turville, since October 15. It reopened on Friday night.

Road contractor Ringway Parkman was carrying out bridge strengthening and repair work to the road on behalf of Wiltshire County Council.

Geoff Windle, 41, landlord of The Salutation Arms, at The Gibb, in Burton, said the road closure was poorly advertised and had virtually cut off his passing trade.

"We could have lessened the blow a lot had we had had prior warning," said Mr Windle.

"A diversion was set up to take the traffic all the way around Sherston and Luckington, which is about a 15 mile trip to get round to where we are, when it's usually only one and a half miles.

"Following the foot and mouth problems this has been an extra difficulty we could well have done without," he said.

Mr Windle said he even placed signs alongside the road at Littleton Drew to advertise his pub, but was told to take them down by police, because they attracted larger vehicles.

"With a little more notice, and liaison with the county council we could have warned our customers and done something about this," Mr Windle added.
