SCREWFIX DIRECT LEAGUE: CALNE Town's hopes of an gaining impressive point at in-form Street were dashed when bogeyman John Hayter bagged a late winner at the Tannery Ground on Tuesday night.

The relegation-threatened Wiltshire club carved out some fine chances and were all set for a deserved point when Hayter pounced in the 85th minute.

The same player scored a late winner at Bremhill View two weeks ago to give the Somerset club a 2-1 Les Phillips Cup victory.

Hayter might have given his side the lead in the closing stages of the first half when he rounded visiting goalkeeper Lee Portch but Andy Towers was on hand to make a timely block.

Calne player-manager Paul Rankin then saw his effort superbly saved by Street goalkeeper James Smith as the visitors rallied.

The second half saw the veteran Portch in fine form as he pulled off three superb saves, the best coming from Carl Diment's close-range volley on 66 minutes.

Tim Jefferies and Calne new boy Matt Ward squandered decent openings for the visitors before Hayter slotted home a Danny Badman cross with five minutes to go.

Calne boss Rankin said he was encouraged by his side's display despite the defeat. He said: "It was a bit of a sickener because we did play well. We have to take what we can out of the game and it is more positive than negative.

"It is another three points dropped but Street have been going well and beat Corsham away recently.

"They looked relieved to get the three points and a draw would definitely have been a fair result.

"But our confidence seems to be building and we will go to Wellington on Saturday looking to build on our performance."
