A SOCCER cup in memory of Rupert Smith, who died after a tragic accident earlier this year, has been presented to his old school at Pewsey by his parents, Barry and Liz Smith.
Rupert, who was 18 when he died after a fall at the family home at Bishops Cannings in April, was a former pupil of St Francis School, Pewsey, where he was a member of the school soccer team.
His parents have given the trophy to be awarded annually to the footballer of the year. Last Friday, Charlie Lamb of Marlborough, became the first footballer to receive it.
Mr and Mrs Smith intend to present the trophy personally in future years, but felt it was too soon after their son's death, and asked headteacher Peter Blundell to present it on their behalf.
Mr Blundell said: "The trophy will mean that Rupert's name will always be remembered here."
It bears an inscription marking Rupert's years at the school from 1985 to 1992. The Smith family hope Rupert's love of football will continue to inspire future generations of St Francis children."
At the ceremony, Mr Blundell handed out school soccer awards to Lewis Richardson and Jonathan Barnwell.
St Francis pupils play soccer until Christmas, but play rugby in the spring term.
