HUNDREDS of needy people in Salisbury District can look forward to a brighter Christmas, thanks to the unprecedented generosity of Journal readers.

More people than ever before responded to our 12th annual appeal for gifts for those for whom Christmas could otherwise be a bleak time.

The parcels, which have swamped the Journal offices in the past few weeks, have been handed over to organisations that will make sure they reach the most deserving people in every corner of the district.

They are destined for the poor, the homeless and the needy - in all age groups, from newborns to pensioners.

Salisbury Journal editor-in-chief David Eidlestein said: "Every year, we seem to hit a new record, but we have never seen anything like this year.

"The generosity of our readers is unbelievable and I never cease to be moved by it."
