FARMER George Pothecary says he is fed up of calling for safety improvements along the A419.

There have been two separate accidents in less than a week in which four people have died.

All have involved a car leaving the road and crossing the central reservation.

One man died last night at the bottom of Blunsdon Hill.

And on Saturday three were killed just south of Cricklade when two vehicles collided.

Mr Pothecary said he has been calling for crash barriers on the stretch of road which passes his Calcutt Court Farm since 1986.

He said: "We've had a number of smaller accidents but this has been a disaster waiting to happen.

"If we had crash barriers along the centre of the road this would not have happened and these people would be alive.

"This work should have been done five years ago when they made other improvements along the A419."

There are no crash barriers down the central reservation on this stretch of the A419 because of the need to maintain access to the houses and two farms along it.

The Highways Agency, which has responsibility for motorways and major trunk roads, is currently looking at a 26-point safety plan for the A419, which together with the A417 is the main link between Swindon, Cirencester and the M5.

The plan includes a scheme to provide crash barriers on the road. This would involve building a new access road to the affected homes and businesses.

But the work is being held up by objections from landowners. Because of this a public inquiry into the development is being held on January 8.

North Swindon MP Michael Wills (Lab) said: "If you live on this road it's getting incredibly difficult to get on and off it safely.

"These are accidents waiting to happen. What's clear is that at the moment the road is not as safe as it could be."
