ONE in five drivers in Trowbridge is unable to see properly behind the wheel, according to research carried out by Specsavers Opticians.
Motorists are being warned that long winter nights and bad driving conditions will make matters worse.
Karen Tolmie, director of Specsavers in Trowbridge, said: "Driving conditions are deteriorating now winter is here.
"Motorists could now find they have trouble reading signs or could experience dazzle from headlights."
After the simple number plate reading check during a driving test there is no compulsory re-test of eyesight until drivers reach 70 years old.
Specsavers is urging motorists to have their eyes tested at least every two years.
"There are a high number of motorists who need glasses or contact lenses for driving who don't wear them.
"I just don't think people understand the risk they are taking with their own safety and that of other road users."
