THE Swindon-based Bible Society sponsored one of its staff to shave off his locks.

The £2,000 Philip Poole raised will be used to provide Bibles for immigration detention centres around the country.

Mr Poole swapped his head of hair for a Santa hat during the charity's annual Christmas party.

He said: "When we heard of the desire for bibles, we knew we had to respond. We hope to provide bibles free of charge for all those people at the centres who want one."

Earlier this year, the Bible Society was approached by the immigration detention centre at Gatwick Airport regarding the need for Bibles.

Because many asylum seekers come from religious backgrounds, centres are holding up to seven chapel services a day.

Demand for Bibles is outstripping supply, so the Bible Society has now launched a national appeal to help raise funds. Each bible costs £4 to supply.

Mr Poole, the charity's business development director, said he was happy with his new look. He joked: "It is a weight off my mind!"
