MALCOLM CROSBY believes he is the man to heal Swindon Town's wounds and lead the team to success on the pitch.

The assistant manager is in charge for the visit to Notts County this evening but Crozza wants more than a caretaker role.

He met with the Town board yesterday afternoon and put his case forward for the manager's post.

He said: "I would love the chance to manage this football club.

"I am confident without being big-headed that I can do the job.

"This is a good club with a cracking set of players.

"They can go on and do better which has to be the aim. But, yes I would like the job."

However, Crosby's immediate challenge is tonight's game with struggling County.

He said: "The lads are professionals and they have to go about their business in the right way.

"But they're a good set of lads so I don't think there will be a problem. There certainly won't be any lack of effort. That's something that Roy wouldn't tolerate and neither will I.

"We're in a lot better position than we were this time last year and we have an FA Cup tie at Manchester City to look forward to."

Although eager to step into Evans' shoes, Crosby said it was important to acknowledge the former director of football.

He said: "Roy had a very good manner with the players.

"Basically it was common sense management."

"It was a sad day, Roy leaving the club. But we have to remain positive.

"Sometimes the only way to get such a disappointment out of your system is by getting out on the pitch and putting in a lot of hard work."

Although Crosby and Razor Ruddock are in the running, former boss Andy King is also being touted by some for a return to the County Ground.

King was sacked in August by former chairman Danny Donegan, a decision which drew a lot of criticism from sections sympathetic to the current board.

The directors were expected to meet this morning to discuss the managerial vacancy at the club.

Crosby is clearly hoping he is the board's choice but whatever they decide, he hopes they do so quickly.

He said: "Let's not have any more uncertainty and speculation."

Town director Bob Holt said: "Clearly we are disappointed that Roy Evans decided to go and we wish him all the best for the future.

"I feel it is important that we resolve the managers position as quickly as possible therefore we will be holding a board meeting this morning to discuss the new appointment.

"The shortlist consists of Malcolm Crosby, Neil Ruddock, Andy King and AN other."

Steve Mildenhall has denied light-hearted accusations from former team mates that he's 'running scared' ahead of tonight's clash with Notts County (see next story).
