FROM recent reports in the Evening Advertiser it would appear that councillors have started to enjoy the Christmas spirit a little early.

n £125,000 on lap top computers.

n New windows for Wat Tyler House a comparatively new, modern building, that shouldn't need new windows, for another 100 years!

n Proposed redevelopment of the PMH site with 500 houses to net the council £9 million. A proposal that will be welcome by all Old Town residents like a kick in the teeth, just when it looked as if congestion in the area would be eased when the hospital moved.

The council could put this money in the Brunel disappearing Lolly Pot. I do realise, of course, that money has no bearing on how the site should be used.

n £36 million needed to fix council homes. It would be a shame if the rent, or some of it, had to be used towards these repairs. Would a private landlord have been allowed to let property fall into such a sad state of disrepair?

n It has been suggested that there will be no parking problems in Dowling Street with the change of use of the old Scout Hall to a Dance Studio.

It has been suggested that most parents walk their children to the dance school. I seem to recall cars parked in Bath Road when the school was there and parking was available at the front and rear, plus a Pay & Display next to Bath Road Garage. I don't live in Dowling Street, but I would be concerned if I did.

Finally the Commonhead park and ride. With a new hospital adjacent, I would have thought that the developer's proposed plans could have proved an asset, especially to people visiting patients at the new hospital. Perhaps the council feels the land will be required for hospital extensions?
