SCREWFIX LEAGUE: Devizes Town produced their best display of the season, beating Premier Division title hopefuls Bideford 2-0.

It was the Devon club's first league defeat of the season, and Devizes' keeper Paul Thompson was again the goalscoring hero.

Thompson who scored a late equaliser at Bishop Sutton a month ago drove home a 60th minute penalty to seal the three points.

Devizes' cause was certainly helped by the controversial tenth minute dismissal of Bideford's Robert Gough.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Bideford still made most of the running.

But the title chasers wasted a succession of chances, and David Lloyd punished the visitors with a 40th minute strike.

Lloyd was then upended on the hour, giving Thompson the chance to seal the match.

Devizes boss Brian Newlands was delighted with the display.

"It was an excellent result," said Newlands.

"I believe Bideford are the best side in the league, and I don't think the sending off really made much difference. We played really well."

Melksham Town slumped to a disappointing 3-1 defeat at Bridgwater.

Chris Young hit a hat-trick for the hosts, with Frankie Coleman replying for Robbie Lardner's side.

Devizes and Melksham come face to face in the Boxing Day derby at the Conigre, kick off 1pm.
