DONATIONS have been pouring in to ensure a happy Christmas for Swindon's needy.
A temporary shelter for the homeless and others who need support at Christmas has been set up at Queens Drive Methodist Church in Park South.
Called Christmas Care 2001, the scheme is now in its 12th year.
It is run by an organisation called Thamesdown Christians Against Homelessness.
Yesterday volunteers were at the centre sorting goods in preparation for its opening today.
Co-ordinator Shirley Fry said that she was grateful for all the clothing, bedding and toiletries that have already been donated.
"It is wonderful, people have been very supportive but we still need fresh produce such as milk, bacon and eggs."
Volunteers are expecting between 10 and 16 guests to stay over Christmas until December 28 and a further 60 or more for Christmas dinner.
Mrs Fry said: "There are people who need support all year around like pensioners, the disabled and those who are just lonely. Their facilities close at this time of years so we step in."
Tomorrow, guests will enjoy a hearty cooked breakfast followed by a turkey dinner and buffet tea.
Throughout the day there will be games and staff are hoping to set up a TV.
Volunteers are still required to help run the event and more donations would be welcomed.
