NEW Town parish church St Mark's in the Railway Village is losing the man who has been its priest for the past six years.
The Rev John Lees, who is married with a young daughter Elizabeth, is leaving because of ill health.
He was appointed rector to replace his predecessor, Father Rex Hurrell.
Mr Lees, who is an accomplished organist, came to Swindon from London where he was in charge of music and ceremonial at St Paul's Cathedral. His wife Clare sings with a local choir. He has been in poor health for the past two years.
St Mark's parish includes St Saviour's Church in Ashford Road, St Luke's in Broad Street and St Aldhelm's Chapel, adjacent to the Rainbow bookshop in Edgware Road.
A new rector will be appointed by the Bishop of Bristol, the Rt Rev Barry Rogerson, but neither he nor the Bishop of Swindon, the Rt Rev Michael Doe, can exercise sacramental rights there, including Holy Communion or confirmation.
For spiritual matters the parish comes under the care of the Bishop of Ebbsfleet.
This arrangement was reached when the Church of England decided to ordain women priests.
St Mark's was among the parishes which declined to have anything to do with bishops who ordain women.
It describes itself as "a forward in faith parish".
Mr Lees and his family will live at Highworth until they are found a new home.
