THERE have been two needless deaths in the Kennet & Avon canal at Avoncliff in just two months.
Both men were found drowned in the same spot where there is nothing between the pathway and the water. Appearances suggest that both were dreadful accidents.
Residents are calling for safety railings and lights to be installed on the towpath.
There will undoubtedly be opposition from purists, but safety must come first.
Next time it could be a child found drowned in that canal. We need action before anyone else dies there.
