Nationwide Building Society, based in Swindon, has been presented the Brake community road safety award for its Cats' Eyes for kids campaign.

It was awarded to the building society by Brake, the road safety organisation, at its annual end of year reception at the Houses of Parliament in London.

Since October, Nationwide has distributed over six million safety reflectors to around 23,500 primary schools, with some going to teaching groups and special needs schools.

The aim is to ensure that each UK primary school child receives a reflector to wear, and in addition around 160,000 curriculum based teaching packs were given out.

Andrew Litchfield, head of Nationwide's community relations, was very pleased with the accolade.

"We're really honoured to receive this award, particularly from a respected and hard-working organisation such as Brake," he said.

Nationwide is continuing the campaign for at least the next five years in a bid to reduce road accidents in the UK.

It hopes that by the end of this period it will have given out over 10 million reflectors and made a real difference in road safety awareness.
