ANDY GURNEY has his sights set on Colchester United tomorrow after thumping home his second goal of the season against Bury on Saturday.

The central defender settled early nerves on Saturday by cracking home the opener and set Town on the road to a 3-1 win.

The former Reading man said: "We started as though we were on fire, 2-0 up after 10 minutes.

"But we let them back in with a sloppy goal which was a bit disappointing.

"It was important we didn't go to pieces at that stage and we got the three points that we really needed."

Gurney was delighted to see his early strike hit the back of the net, ending a long run without a goal.

It was his first strike since netting a late equaliser in a 2-2 draw with Tranmere back in September.

He said: "It was nice to score, a nice feeling but the points were the most important thing."

Gurney is another member of the Town squad keen to see an end to discontent off the pitch.

He said: "It's time we all started pulling together.

"If we can start putting a few results together then hopefully the fans will really start to get behind us."

Although Town did not manage a clean sheet, Gurney was happy enough with the overall defensive display.

He said: "The goal was an unwanted 'blip' but I thought we looked quite solid otherwise.

"We'll need to be solid at Colchester on New Year's Day too.

"We want to go to Layer Road and get three points to keep us moving in the right direction."

Gurney has looked impressive since returning from suspension but his Boxing Day dismissal means he faces another spell sitting in the stands.

He said: "It is very frustrating.

"I thought it was a harsh sending off but if I keep playing well then hopefully the gaffer will bring me back in when the ban is over.

"People are starting to talk about the Manchester City match but the Colchester game is the one we have to focus on.

"We're confident we can get a result. If we keep it tight at the back then we know we have the pace in attack to cause any side problems.

"Let's go there, try and get off to another good start and who knows?"
