PAUL EDWARDS is desperate not to be discarded as a one-season wonder by manager Andy King.
The 22-year-old winger is Town's classic 'rags to riches' star and the Mancunian does not want to see his professional dream snatched away after his first season as a professional.
He said: "It has been unbelievable for me really. As a kid I always hoped I would make it as a professional but thought I'd blown it after not making the most of the opportunity at Manchester City.
"The injuries have been really frustrating but I think I have coped pretty well considering this is my first season as a professional.
"I know I still have a lot to learn but I have faith in my own ability."
Edwards is one of a dozen players out of contract and is aware that the manager has admitted up to eight stars could be shipped out.
This time last year, the Mancunian was not even guaranteed regular non-league football but a successful trial in pre-season saw Edwards handed the chance he has always craved.
But it was Roy Evans and not Andy King who handed the winger his debut.
A more than promising start was abruptly halted when Edwards injured his hip on the night King returned as manager.
Although he has battled back to fitness, he has yet to start a first team match under King.
He looked impressive during a 68 minute work out in last night's Wiltshire Premier Shield match with Wootton Bassett (pictured right) but Edwards knows it is in the first team where he has to impress.
With only six games to go, the clock is ticking.
He said: "I was quite pleased with my performance last night and hopefully it has put me a step nearer to the first team.
"As for the future, you cannot take anything for granted but I hope I have done enough to be offered a new contract.
"I just want a chance to start in the games we have left."
Manager Andy King said: "Paul Edwards is one of a number of players I have to make decisions on.
"I'm not really sure I've had a chance to watch the 'real' Paul Edwards yet.
"Hopefully there will be an opportunity to see him perform for 90 minutes in the first team before the end of the season."
Town's victory last night sets up a final clash with Chippenham Town. The date and venue have yet to be confirmed.
