NEIL RUDDOCK has his heart set on a first team return before the end of the current campaign.

Town's player-coach made a successful comeback against Wootton Bassett in testing conditions at the County Ground last night.

The 33-year-old's left knee stood up well on a muddy pitch in driving rain.

He made a couple of hefty challenges and looked strong in the air.

There was even the opportunity to try a touch of Beckham magic as he almost beat Bassett keeper Richard Stevens from the halfway line.

Ruddock said: "It wasn't the toughest of tests for the lads but it was just great to be out there again.

"Hopefully I can get in a couple more reserve games and get that important match fitness back.

"When I first injured the knee, I thought it would be six weeks.

"Well, maybe six weeks for a 21-year-old but I'm no spring chicken and I'm a big lad.

"There was no way I was going to put myself out there before I was ready just to get injured again.

"Andy King and I get on fine, the simple reason I haven't played is that I have been injured."

But Ruddock hopes he will have the chance to hear the County Ground 'Razor Roar' before the end of the current campaign.

He said: "It would be nice to get an appearance to thank the fans and say see you next year."
