TWO nightclub doormen are testing their pulling power by rowing a record-breaking 4,500 miles across the Indian Ocean.
Simon Chalk, 29, and Bill Greaves, 41, are due to set sail from Kalbarri in Western Australia at the end of April.
Their destination is Reunion Island a French island off the coast of Madagascar and the voyage is expected to last 60 days. If successful, it will break a world record.
The venture is being sponsored by Phil Forbes, owner of Entertainment Leisure Services Swindon Ltd, which owns Mission nightclub in Old Town. He said: "It's great to support these men on their adventure. But there will be sharks bigger than the boat out there, so I hope the fish aren't too hungry."
Thirty years ago the same journey was rowed single-handed. But this will be the first time ever the ocean has been rowed double handed.
Taking the challenge in their stride, the two-strong crew from Devon are yet to embark on an arduous training programme.
Bill said: "We have regular arm wrestles. I haven't started going to the gym. But I take my dog for walks on the beach every day."
Simon believes he has the experience to ensure their success, having crossed the Atlantic in 64 days five years ago.
The boat is equipped with a satellite phone and e-mail so Bill and Simon can stay in touch with friends, family and the emergency services.
He said: "I feel fit enough for the journey. But the sweltering temperatures will be hard to cope with. It will also be lonely without my girlfriend."
