North Wiltshire District Council's website is a real hit, according to an independent survey.

The website has made it into the Top 20 of local authority websites, according to a survey carried out by the Society of Information Technology Management in their Insight Report.

The study looked at all 467 local UK local authority websites.

They were reviewed and assessed against relevant e-government and good practice criteria.

"Websites are a critical part of plans for local e-government.

"In particular, they are becoming a mechanism for delivering services and encouraging dialogue with citizens and customers," said district council spokesman Paul Langcaster.

"To do this successfully, they must become adept at providing information, at handling services and at engaging with members of the public in a way that encourages them to repeat the experience."

The most popular web pages proved to be the job opportunities.

North Wiltshire was one of only three shire districts to make it into the top 20.

"North Wiltshire District Council recognises the importance of its own website and is constantly reviewing the services and information offered through the web," said Mr Langcaster.
