The Isuzu Trooper looks exactly like a 4x4 vehicle should big and chunky.

The squared off lines and solid styling make this an imposing machine and it generates confidence in the Trooper's ability to tackle the toughest of terrain.

And although less practical, the short wheel base version is particularly pleasing to the eye. But does the performance live up to the looks?

In a word, yes.

The 3.0 litre turbo diesel engine is an impressive power plant both off road and on.

In fact the Trooper is a revelation at cruising speeds and manufacturer figures of 99.4 mph top speed and 0-62 mph of 13.5 seconds don't really give an indication just how lively a performer it is.

Isuzu has improved the efficiency of the diesel engine, however economy figures of 27.4 mpg combined for the five speed manual are still a bit poor.

This remains one of the few disappointments in a car that represents incredibly good value for money, the 3.0 litre, TD Duty SWB starting at £19,995 on the road.

Although lacking a degree of snob value compared with some of its rivals, not many of them can offer such a competitive package.

The interior is well appointed and has the usual array of stowage spaces and cup holders. And there are some thoughtful touches like the electric aerial for the sound system and electric foldable wing mirrors, a real bonus when parking this wide car roadside or in a garage.

One frustrating drawback in the three-door version tested is the desperately uncomfort-able driving position.

Any number of alterations to seat position, steering wheel height all proved fruitless in improving a problem that boils down to the seat simply not sliding back far enough creating the ironic sensation of feeling squashed into a big car.

As for getting into the back seat, this is not be recommended for large people!

The Trooper is tough and rugged and its unfussy design has huge appeal.

In high ratio one can move from two-wheel drive to four-wheel drive by just pushing a button. Moving into low ratio is accomplished by operating a small lever.

Simply put, Isuzu does what it says on the packet. It offers a no-nonsense approach to off-roading, a more than capable on road performance and great versatility.

More of a workhorse than a schools run car, Isuzu has produced a thoroughly impressive 4x4 at an affordable price.
