DEMOLITION has begun at the former Territorial Army building in Trowbridge but the town council is to preserve two regimental crests.
The building, which is making way for retirement flats, marked the last link between the town and the army.
Trowbridge mayor Jeff Osborn said: "The crests, one of the Wiltshire Yeomans and one of the Wiltshire Regiment, are a partof the town's heritage and we plan to keep them as a permanent memorial."
The council plans to hold a meeting with interested parties, including comrades associations in the town, to decide where to put the crests.
Cllr Osborn said: "People going past the site in the future would have no idea what used to be there and I think it is important that these memories are kept for future generations."
One idea that has been suggested is that they be put with the war memorial in the town park.
The building itself has been bought by businessman Tom Rothschild who, it is thought, plans to incorporate the stone into other projects.
