TROWBRIDGE may be back in the running to keep the Wiltshire and Swindon Record Office amid claims that Devizes is no longer an option.
Trowbridge mayor, Jeff Osborn, said at a meeting of the town council on Tuesday: "It seems that the Devizes option is going to be dumped and that the reason is access."
Wiltshire County Council had given its backing to relocating the office in Devizes but Swindon Council has supported Swindon, with Chippenham as a second choice.
This may now change as new guidelines are likely to give greater emphasis to access and Devizes is the only site that does not have a rail link.
The new guidelines are also expected to stress educational links, which will favour the Chippenham site as it is close to the town's college.
Wiltshire County Council's cabinet was due to hold a meeting to discuss the options today.
