UNTIL APRIL 16: WHILE most people would come away from a yoga session somewhat calmer, even tranquil, Jem Hobbs gets all fired up and therein finds inspiration for his paintings of the sun.
His first exhibition in Bath, Sous le Soleil, currently at Green Park Brasserie, Bath, has some dramatic suns few of which would lead you naturally to his graphic design background working in London, Brighton and Bath as a Mac visualiser.
He says his inspiration comes from practising Hatha yoga and a Taoist philosophy. Dreams, too, interplay but, as he openly admits: "I'm prepared to fail". He strives to get behind the sun, to become almost part of it.
It's all a far cry from his former world of marketing, public relations and advertising, but, like many who fall beneath Bath's spell, life becomes a crossroads.
Hobbs, 31 in April, puts great power and vibrant colour into his paintings, a visual imagery of the sun as ultimate source of life: To light and enlighten, motivate and captivate, hypnotise and mesmerise. He says Sous le Soleil is to "inspire and help you to rediscover the joie de vivre".
It may well. But I would imagine one of his works on the lounge wall would immediately turn your thoughts to redecoration. Which might be a good thing.
The exhibition, organised by Dr Moira Rudolf on behalf of Green Park Station (Bath) Ltd, runs until April 16 and is one of a series of similar events.
