RAIL safety is not usually associated with the arts but a Swindon community project has used its talents to tackle the subject.
Railtrack commissioned Swindon Arts Community Fund to work with Headlands and Commonweal Schools, to produce the rail safety campaign. Artists Mike Juggins of 'Ants in Yer Pants' and Sue Deedigan, of Kandu Arts for Sustainable Development, helped oversee the project.
The group of year 11 students designed posters aimed at young people, aged between 10 and 18, which delivered messages about anti-social behaviour such as vandalism, litter, and trespass.
Mayor, David Cox, viewed the outcome, which now forms an exhibition at Headlands School. He presented the students with certificates for successfully completing the project.
Rosa Matheson, director of SACF said: "It is refreshing to see business being bold and thinking creatively in order to get their message across. The project will be involving young people and looking to them to sell on their message to their peers."
David Belmont, Contract Safety Manager for Railtrack, said: "We are always seeking new ways to deliver our safety message.
"We believe the Arts, in all its various forms to be a persuasive medium that is accessible to all."
