WORLD CUP fever seems to be passing Swindon by, judging by the poor response to a charity raffle offering tickets to England's last home friendly before the tournament.

Hardly anyone has bothered to buy a ticket so far, despite the prospect of winning two tickets to the England versus Paraguay match at Anfield on April 17, plus £100 to cover travel expenses.

The Paraguay game is the last that Sven Goran Eriksson's men will play on home soil before jetting off to Japan in May.

Raffle organiser Cilla Slipper said she was surprised the 5,000 tickets had not already been snapped up.

"I really thought people would be queuing up to buy these," said Mrs Slipper, who is part of the Skyline Appeal committee hoping to raise £1.5m for the restoration of Christ Church in Old Town.

She had thought the combination of atmospheric Anfield and the last chance to see England on home soil would prove a winner for the appeal.

She now hopes Liverpool's emotional win over Roma on Tuesday will whet local people's appetite for the Anfield experience. "The atmosphere was fantastic you saw it on TV and now you could be there," she said.

Raffle tickets, £1 each, are available from the following venues: Evening Advertiser, 100 Victoria Road, Workmans in Prospect Place, Old Town, Goldsworthy's hairdressers in Faringdon Road, Christ Church Parish Office in Cricklade Street, and the Malt and Hops pub in Drove Road.
