FIREFIGHTERS with breathing apparatus were sent into a smoke-filled chip shop after a fryer caught fire.
Two fire appliances, one from Swindon and one from Stratton St Margaret, tackled the blaze at Toby Dick's in Victoria Road, Old Town.
Paramedics were also called in amid fears that people inside may have inhaled the smoke which filled the building.
The flames broke out about 10am on Saturday, and Victoria Road was soon blocked off by the police.
Senior firefighter at the scene, Assistant Divisional Officer Mark Gaskarth, said: "We believe the fire started in a deep fat fryer.
"People tried to extinguish the fire in its early stages, but then we were called.
"What happens with this sort of fire is that we need to make sure nobody has breathed in the smoke."
