Gloucester United gained revenge for their midweek Floodlit Cup Final defeat by Fairford as they beat the Cinder Lane side 5-1 in the Complete Music Challenge Cup semi-final first leg.

Disappointed Fairford boss Mark Webb said: "We were dreadful, it was our worst performance of the season. We gave away some stupid goals and we will have to work hard to pull four goals back in the second leg.

"I warned the lads at the start not to be complacent because they are a good side and deserve their place at the top of the premier division. That was the sixth time we have played each other and there always seem to be plenty of goals scored."

Peacey got United off to a good start after 14 minutes, the Fairford defence leaving him unmarked from a corner. Meadows added a second on the half-hour, the first to react to a rebound off the post.

Fairford steadied the ship a bit as they started the second half and Stoddart missed a great chance, blazing over the bar from close range.

Disaster then struck, United scoring two in as many minutes through Peacey and Freeman. Richard Watkins pulled a goal back for Fairford, but Casey added a fifth for United two minutes from time.

Purton were also in cup semi-final action, defeating Division 1 East side Finchampstead 1-0 in the first leg of the Supplementary Cup.

Manager Alan Clarke was pleased with his side, who were giving away weight and height to a big home side.

"We have got half a job done and we must make sure we are not complacent next week at the Red House."

Purton started well and Alan Webb was unlucky early on when he chipped the keeper, but the ball hit the post and ran along the line before being cleared.

The only goal came on the hour when a long clearance by Jim Igoe was picked up by Steve Tucker who lobbed the keeper from 40 yards, then ran past him to crash the ball home.

Despite pressure from the home side, Purton hung on to their lead and both Tucker and Avenell almost added further goals for the visitors.

Highworth Town, after their impressive run of seven games without defeat, have now conceded 11 goals in two games after their 5-1 home defeat by Cirencester Academy.

The Academy took the lead on 23 minutes with a good header from Neil Dix and added a second just before the break, Justin Miller bending a 25-yard free kick around the Highworth wall and past keeper Alan Churchward.

The visitors continued on top after the interval and two goals in four minutes from Gareth Davies and Neil Dix gave the Academy a 4-0 lead. Dave Webb pulled a goal back on 75 minutes after good work by Warren Fuller, but the Academy had the last word, Mark Belcher making it 5-1.

Wootton Bassett slipped to fourth from bottom after falling 3-0 at Didcot.

Bassett held the home side for three-quarters of the game but in the last quarter Ian Concannon scored three in six minutes.

In Division 1, Pewsey Vale continue to lead the table after defeating Kidlington 2-1.

Steve Litton gave Kidlington the lead on four minutes, and they should have added to their tally when Fraser Gills shot wide from the spot midway through the half.

Tony Dyer equalised from a Micky Goodwin corner in the 63rd minute, though, and Paul Day hit the winner with five minutes remaining.

Shrivenham beat visitors Cirencester United 4-1, Green and Ayres scoring in the first half, Pew and Telling after the interval. McSherry scored for United.
