ANDY KING is adamant that the 'fussy' approach is the only sure way of securing fresh talent for Swindon Town.

Despite giving trials to almost 30 hopefuls from across the globe yesterday, the County Ground boss was disappointed that not one of the players really caught his eye.

King looked on from the stand as a real mixed bag of talent attempted to impress him, ultimately without success.

Sunderland's Stephen Harrison, Southampton's J P Mills (brother of ex-Town midfielder Jamie) and the brother of left-back Sol Davis performed alongside players from Italy, France, Germany and Holland.

There was also a university student and a Cameroon striker hoping to make a career in English football.

King said: "These trial games are useful exercises, but I cannot honestly say that anyone really jumped out at me.

"There is one lad, a left-sided midfield player, that I might look at in the reserves on Wednesday but even that is not certain. But there was nobody who would push out any of the players currently in my side."

King said there was no doubting the technical ability of some of the trialists but he needed players who would fit into a certain system of play.

He said: "The simple question is, would they be able to cope with and thrive in the Second Division and are they better than what I have?

"Even if someone catches my eye, I have to ask myself if they are of the type I want. There was a little nippy striker playing in the trial game who looked good but that's not the type I want.

"I am fussy but I make no apologies for that. I would rather bring nobody in than bring the wrong person in.

"Seeing some of those on trial made me think that perhaps what I have on the books is better than some people, including myself, realised.

"But when I say fussy, what I mean is that I am careful in the extreme when it comes to making choices.

"I feel I am a good judge of a player. Everybody makes mistakes but I would like to think I have a decent record when it comes to bringing players in who will improve and strengthen a squad.

"The board have said they will accept mid-table obscurity next year. As a manager, I will not accept it and I will not accept my players accepting it either."

Town's reserves picked up only their third league win of the season with a 1-0 win at Gillingham. Young striker Graham Walton scored the only goal of the game in the 13th minute.

The reserves are back in action tomorrow when they take on Portsmouth at the County Ground (2pm).
