WITH reference to Denis Harrison's letter Evening Advertiser March 7, I am not quite sure of the writer's sense of humour.
But his suggestion for a points system for knocking cyclists off bikes, and double points for a kill, is simply plain rubbish and dangerous talk. Please don't put ideas in people's heads.
I am sure much of today's crime comes from the television and the media, then to read his letter (Let's have fun with cyclists) goes beyond belief.
On the issue of cycling, let's behave sensibly and responsibly. Most cyclists are car owners and respect those on bikes.
The roads of today are very busy and one has to be very alert to what is going on around them.
They are not a place for the faint-hearted and so we all need to be well mannered.
In the letter Mr Harrison stated that there might be an objection to his points system and would propose a licensing system for pavement mounting and a semi-seasonal scheme whereby cyclists hunting out of school term would mean a forfeit. What rubbish to write.
What we need is a points system based on the highway code whereby good manners and respect for other road users, allowing them to ride their cycles in safety.
Cycling is a growing sport. I see more and more cyclists out enjoying themselves. I believe our council is doing much to encourage more cyclists to commute to work, with the ever increasing development of cycle paths, and find much of the proposals in future development a very exciting prospect.
Please, let us act as responsible adults when out on the road, either car or bike.
