VERY special birthday greetings to Dame Vera Lynn, who celebrated her 85th year last week (March 20).
Dame Vera captured the very heart of our nation throughout World War II, during our darkest days when invasion was a grave threat to our priceless freedom.
She engendered deep affection in the services and in civvie street. She symbolised all our hopes and dreams, especially for loved ones who were longing to be reunited and for whom Dame Vera would transmit personal messages. She truly was the Forces Sweetheart.
We, who lived through that historic era, owe to this remarkable lady a tremendous debt of gratitude for the inspiring trouper that she was.
Dame Vera's moving rendition of We'll Meet Again and The White Cliffs of Dover are immortalised. The legacy of her contribution during World War II is recorded in the annals of history.
Dame Vera, you are a national institution. We, who remember, love you dearly. So our very special thanks for the memory.
