Warm and welcoming with an eclectic mix of red and cream decor, modern furniture and original features, Out and Out, at Bathampton Mill, was an immediate hit with us.
Formerly a Beefeater, the Mill is found in a peaceful country setting just across a toll bridge (30 pence!), and has a large beer garden perfect for fine afternoons.
Clearly a well thought out "dining experience" the Mill is one of 34 restaurants of an up-and-coming chain, all in unique, often listed, buildings.
What's offered is something for everyone, from the menu there's a good selection of English, foreign and vegetarian dishes right down to the unobtrusive background music. On a Saturday night, adults and children, couples and large family groups were all accommodated with ease.
Justin and I were seated within seconds, although we were offered a squashy leather sofa in the bar if we fancied a drink first. This made a great first impression, as we felt we could relax and take our time, but hunger had got the better of us, so we decided to go straight in.
The restaurant itself has a series of nooks on different levels, which meant we didn't feel crowded, despite the fact that there wasn't a chair free.
To kick off, I decided on grilled chicken skewers in Indonesian sauce, while Justin had lamb koftas (both £4.50). Watching dishes being delivered to other tables while we waited, we soon realised this was not a place that stinted on portions. Both our starters were delicious, the chicken infused with lemongrass and served with a spicy sauce, the well-cooked lamb accompanied with a minty dip.
Main course for me was a Thai green chicken curry (£8.50), while Justin decided on the chef's special, in this case a mixed grill, which unexpectedly arrived with chips (£13.50). We also ordered a side salad and seasonal vegetables (broccoli and leek), at £1.50 each.
My curry was served with coconut rice and mini nans, and was piping hot, with just the right amount of kick.
Justin's meal included steak, gammon and sausage. He certainly enjoyed it, but said that without the salad or veg sides, the dish would've been a bit dry and bland although he admitted that that is the nature of such a dish.
Feeling far more full than either of us would care to admit, we were determined to sample the sweets and both opted for rich chocolate tart (£3.45).
Expecting a small slice and a dollop of clotted cream, we were a bit surprised to be served two slices each, plus cream, chocolate sauce and slices of strawberry. Undaunted, we dug in, and found the whole thing moreish, with the emphasis on 'rich'.
After coffee for him and a pot of tea for her, plus drinks throughout the meal, the bill came to a very reasonable £49.45.
Service was impeccable and friendly throughout, and we left with appetites completely satisfied, sure that future visits with family or friends would be on the cards.
