DRINKING alcohol in Salisbury parks and streets could soon be a criminal offence.
In a bid to clear the city centre of rowdy drunks, Salisbury District Council this week put out for consultation a plan to ban drinking in virtually every public place inside the ring road.
It would turn popular open spaces like the swimming pool grounds and the Greencroft into alcohol-free zones.
The controversial proposal is already dividing public opinion.
Some have welcomed the idea, saying that a crackdown is necessary to stop the city centre becoming swamped by alcohol-fuelled yobs.
But others believe it is a draconian measure that would infringe the liberty and enjoyment of peaceful summer gatherings of families and friends.
In a report to the district council's city area, community safety officer Philip Rawlinson emphasised that the proposed designated area could be amended and was currently only a basis for consultation with residents, the police and licensees within the zone.
