Two teenagers were pulled to safety from the River Avon in Melksham this week after a fun-filled swim went horribly wrong.

Fortunately they were saved by a team of 19 firemen but the incident brings to light the dangers of children swimming in rivers and lakes during the warm summer months.

Too many times we hear of an innocent dip ending in tragedy and while the Melksham teenagers were uninjured, it might have ended up a different story.

Wiltshire Fire Brigade has issued warnings to parents urging them to drum home the message to children of the dangers of playing near rivers. It is up to parents to make the message is heeded.
