THE weather may be getting warmer as spring gets underway but there was a chilly reception at Asda Wal-Mart.

The giant supermarket in Haydon Wick was the unlikely setting for an ice rink giving shoppers the chance to test out their skills as part of a fundraising event.

Members of Swindon Junior Ice Hockey team also took to the ice as eager shoppers took part in a beat the goalie competition.

Children and adults alike paid 50p for a half hour spin. All money raised will go to Macmillan nurses who provide treatment and care to cancer sufferers.

Diane Forster-Heatlie, events co-ordinator at the store, was impressed with the turnout.

She said: "It's proving very popular. We've already got about 18 people on the ice already and it's only been open half an hour.

"We are hoping to raise a few hundred pounds from the day. The ice rink was part of our grand opening deal but we decided to save it back for Easter.

"It's just meant to be a fun thing for people to take part in."

The store will also be giving away children's colouring packs throughout the Easter weekend.
