DEE and Charlie Warren may be celebrating 50 years together but the couple from Penhill remember their wedding day as though it was yesterday.

And the happy pair have just returned from a trip to see Dee's brother in Hong Kong where they were treated to champagne receptions at the local sporting clubs.

Dee, 78, and Charlie, 79, met and fell in love in Germany during the war where Charlie was serving as a Private in the Royal Artillery.

Dee, who worked for the foreign office deciphering codes, said: "One day he brought a message over and I was on the desk. Our relationship was very easy going although he was keener than I was.

"He asked me to marry him first but I was having a good time and kept him waiting for six years.

"Eventually I proposed while walking over the Quantocks in Somerset. It was very romantic."

After their wedding ceremony at Cannington Church in Somerset, the couple honeymooned in London taking in shows such as Oklahoma and Annie Get Your Gun, and later that summer holidayed in Jersey.

They have two daughters, Ginny, 45, an IT consultant from Marlborough and Roz, 40, who is a teacher in Essex, and granddaughters Nadia, 10, and Triana, five.

Ginny said: "They are a very easy going and laid back pair which is probably why their marriage has been successful for so long."

Dee agrees with her daughter adding: "If you don't approach things in a laid back manner you could almost comes to blows."
