Purton made it through to the final of the Supplementary Cup, but were made to struggle by Finchampstead, who won 3-2 on the day.

The visitors' victory brought the scores to 3-3 on aggregate, but Purton then won on a penalty shoot-out, 3-1, to ensure an appearance in the final.

Purton found themselves a goal down after just ten minutes when they conceded a penalty, and Bruce Rolls scored from the spot.

The home side's central defender Lee Marshall got on the end of a good inswinging corner from Steve Tucker to send both sides in level at the break.

The visitors, who had the edge in the first half, continued on top, and a hesitant Purton defence allowed Bruce Rolls to add a second and regain their lead midway through the half.

Shortly after, Purton were back on level terms, Steve Tucker netting from the penalty spot. Their joy was short-lived however, as almost immediately Jamie Clarke drove a 25 -yard free kick past Purton keeper Alford, to regain the lead and send the tie into extra time.

Despite close calls at either end, there were no further goals and the tie was decided on a penalty shoot-out.

Purton keeper Alford saved the first penalty for the visitors, Steve Tucker making no mistake for Purton. Finchampstead then hit the post with their second, scored from the third and shot wide from the fourth. Justin Lowe and Mark McMeeking netted for Purton to send the Red House faithful home with a smile on their faces.

Highworth Town, also in Supplementary Cup action, defeated visitors Middle Barton by two goals to nil, to reach the semi final, where they meet Old Woodstock Town.

Highworth's win brought to an end a run of reverses, the last being an embarrassing 2-1 defeat by bottom-of-the-table Cheltenham Saracens in midweek.

The visitors from Division One West started well, and could well have taken an early lead, spurning two good opportunities. However, it was Highworth who eventually took the lead on the half-hour, when a good cross from Tony Joyce was headed into the net by Warren Fuller to give his side an interval lead.

Highworth continued on top after the break and scored a second on 66 minutes, when Matt Saye chased a long ball out of defence, pushed the ball around stranded keeper Guy Smith, who had rushed to the edge of the area, and shot into an empty net.

Both Paul Cooper and Warren Fuller could have added to the total in the closing stages, but the two goals were enough to see them through to the semi-final and a two-legged tie with Old Woodstock Town.

Wootton Bassett gained a deserved victory at Bicester, beating the home side in a vital six-pointer.

Bassett looked much the better side in a goalless first half, Mark Vaughan firing over the bar from close range and Nathan Hall missing with an easy looking header.

Three minutes after the start, Bassett got their reward when a superb run and cross by Nick Tooley found Mark Vaughan who volleyed an unstoppable shot past keeper Richard Darvill.

The visitors kept up the pressure and home keeper Darvill was forced to make several good stops and Bassett's Rich Theobald registered the miss of the day.

With ten minutes to go Bassett were down to ten men after Justin Hyde was sent off but they held on to their three precious points despite heavy pressure from the home side.

Fairford Town, who lost at home to Didcot in mid-week, were held to a no-score draw at Henley Town, who are struggling in the relegation area.

Fairford face a tough task on Wednesday evening at Cinder Lane in the second leg of the Challenge Cup, trailing Gloucester United by five goals to one.

In Division One, the top-of -the- table clash between Pewsey Vale and Hook Norton ended in a 2-1 victory for the visitors, all the goals coming in the first half, Paul Day after 14 minutes for Pewsey, and Parkinson and Lester for Hook.

Malmesbury Vics picked up three points in their bid to escape relegation with a 1-0 win over Easington Sports, Hillier netting in the 16th minute.

Shrivenham helped the Vics' cause by beating fellow strugglers Headington Amateurs by two goals to one, McGill and Ayres for the home side, and Thorn for the visitors.

Highlight of the Hellenic League programme was Didcot Town's goal machine Ian Concannon who scored all six of his side's goals against Pegasus Juniors. It was the third time this season the striker has scored six or more goals in a game.
