WOOTTON Bassett completed a successful Easter programme when they defeated Pegasus Juniors 2-1 to collect a maximum six points from their two games.
A delighted Bassett manager Pete Yeardley said: "The lads knew it was two vital games for us and they responded well. We play fellow strugglers Southall Town on Wednesday in another six-pointer and we will be looking for another victory."
There was not a great deal of excitement in the first half until the 40th minute when a good through ball by Jack Dodds found Nathan Hall who took the ball in his stride to score in the bottom right hand corner of the net.
Two minutes into the second half Bassett were two goals up, Rick Theobold latching on to a half clearance to lob keeper Andy Watkins.
Pegasus fought back and some indifferent Bassett defending allowed Mark Davies to round the home keeper and pull a goal back.
Bassett's Jack Dodd and Rick Theobold both missed one-on-one chances with the keeper but luckily for the home side they did not prove too costly as the home side held on.
Highworth Town lost 2-1 at Tuffley Rovers, and they trailed at half-time to a disputed penalty from Scott Medcroft but equalised in the 75th minute through Paul Cooper. Two minutes later Mark Patterson regained the lead for the home side.
In Division One Purton were brought back to earth with a bump. After making it to the final of the Supplementary Cup on Saturday they were beaten at home 2-1 by lowly Kidlington, putting a severe dent in their title hopes.
Steve Tucker got Purton off to a good start scoring with a 30 yarder after 17 minutes. However second half goals from Leighton James on 52 minutes and a strike by Fraser Gills ten minutes from time ruined the Red House party.
It turned out to be a disastrous weekend for Don Rogers' Pewsey Vale, losing to Hook Norton on Saturday and beaten 2-1 by Ross Town yesterday.
It was a severe blow for the Wiltshire side who looked favourites for the title a couple of weeks ago.
Malmesbury Vics, struggling to avoid relegation, were beaten 2-0 at home by Old Woodstock Town, Lee Keys with a goal in each half, while Shrivenham continued their recent good run with a 3-0 away win over Chipping Norton.
