VERSATILE David Duke is looking to 'settle down' with Swindon Town next season.

The 23-year-old Scotsman joins Adam Willis and Alan Reeves in committing himself to the County Ground for 2002/3.

Duke has spent the last three weeks considering his options but has decided he does want to be part of Andy King's plans for the new season.

He said: "The club have given a little in terms of the contract I wanted and although I've yet to send in the letter of acceptance, I'm very confident I'll be staying.

"It's a one-year deal but there is a possibility of two.

"I am happy and settled in the area and I believe the club is starting to sort itself out. It is certainly heading in the right direction on the pitch.

"The first year or so has been a very, very steep learning curve and we all know there is still a long way to go.

"But I want to be part of a team that is looking to push up the table.

"I won't deny that the security of a contract has also been a factor.

"The gaffer is right when he says it is a brave man who turns down a contract."

But Duke denied Sol Davis' decision to reject a new deal had influenced his thinking.

He said: "I can see people might jump to the conclusion that if Sol goes, it helps me. I don't think that. Even if Sol was to go, there would still be competition for places, especially if the gaffer brought someone else in."

Although Duke was signed by Colin Todd as a midfielder in the summer of 2000, his versatility last year allowed Roy Evans and Andy King to play him at wing back on both flanks as well as the left and right side of midfield.

Duke said: "As a player you are just happy to be in the team but I think you always feel happier if you are playing regularly in the same position, whatever it may be.

"I will do whatever job the manager asks of me though."

But whatever his role next season, Duke knows there is one area of his game crying out for improvement.

He said: "I only scored two goals last year so I, and the rest of the team, will be looking to score a few more. We are all well aware that we didn't score enough."

Town defender Chris Collins has been called up for the Wales Under 19 squad.

The 18-year-old right-back, who has recently been made available for transfer by Andy King, is likely to feature in a double-header against Norway in Wales on May 18 and 19.

Younger brother Matthew, who left Town for Fulham in a £200,000 deal last season, has just returned from international duty with the Under 18s.
