Personnel carriers and Land Rovers are among the military equipment being exported by Britain to Israel. Bombs, tear gas and components for helicopters and electronic equipment are also included on the export list.
Members of Faringdon Peace Group learned this at a meeting on Wednesday, May 1, when Chris Cole, from Campaign against the Arms Trade, addressed their monthly meeting. They were horrified to learn that British Aerospace is the largest exporter of arms in the world, even selling to the Pentagon.
The meeting has given added impetus to the twice weekly vigils for peace and justice in Palestine held by the group. The schedule has been slightly rearranged, and from Monday, May 13, they will be on Mondays and Fridays from 7-8pm. All are welcome. When asked what good it does to stand in the market place with a banner, one of the co-ordinators of the vigils, Dave Watson, said: "The vigils are necessary to promote awareness of the people in the town about the desperate situation in the Middle East. We want to inform people of the problems which humanity is now facing. The schedule has been rearranged slightly so as to make a more visible presence.
Faringdon Peace Group meets on the first Wednesday of every month at 8pm. Everyone is welcome and there is no charge.
